What To Do When You’re Feeling Overwhelmed With Blogging

I’m pacing up and down in my living room, phone in hand, thinking of how I’m going to complete a post about how to stop feeling overwhelmed with blogging when I’m encountering those feelings myself. Haha I’ve been overwhelmed with blogging so many times but I’ve always managed to come out alive and kicking!

Finding the motivation to write, publish and promote posts can be difficult for some bloggers. Blogging can be hard sometimes. And trust me, I totally understand how difficult it is to keep up with writing posts, sharing them, promoting and engaging with your community. It can easily turn into a full-time job.

Overwhelmed with blogging….

I usually overwhelmed when I have a mountain of tasks I need to complete. I wake up some mornings dreading all my Pinterest pins, blogging posts and Instagram pictures I have to keep up with. Then instead of actually doing it, I shut down and do nothing at all.

Once I have a long to-do list I begin to prioritize what is really important and that can leave my blogging as a second priority (I know).

I often shut down because I ask myself “why is this causing so much anxiety for me? Is it even that serious”. The answer to me is no, nothing is never that serious. Which results in me pushing all my blogging duties aside.

It can also be extremely demoralizing when you are pushing out posts and you’re not getting the engagement you want or you are working for. It’s in those times that it is most tempting to ask yourself if you should to quit or keep going?

And sometimes…it’s just not fun. That’s the one thing I dread the most. I never want to get to a point in my blog where I feel like writing is a chore. I always want it to be fun and something I look forward to.

Ask yourself what is really important.

What is really important? Blogging to me is important but at this time in my life is it really important to cause more anxiety than my education? Or my health? No it’s not.

I’ve always gotten some form of anxiety/FOMO from social media so I always aggressively take action when I feel it creeping up again. I try to re-center my thoughts and focus on what is really important. Doing this removes those feelings of anxiety.

Only do the bare minimum and what is necessary

You’re not super woman. It’s okay to not be able to do 1000 things at once. Try to focus on one thing and do that well. Last week, I didn’t want to read any posts or pin on Pinterest. I guess you could say I took a break because I didn’t have the mental energy to do blogging stuff. I just wanted to binge watch Stranger things 2. LOL

All I did was like a few pictures on my Instagram. It really took the pressure off for a while and now I’m ready to go back in full force!

Always try to automate things that can be automated. Automate your Pinterest with Tailwind. You could even automate your Instagram. At the moment, I don’t do either because I don’t want to spend that money yet. But once I do, it will definitely ease the pressure of keeping up with blogging for me! I highly recommend it.

Force yourself to write, Even if you don’t feel like it.

When I don’t feel like writing, I write. Even if it’s the shittiest thing I’ve ever written in my life I’ll keep typing and finish the post. I can then later go back and edit it. Which usually turns out to be a really good post!

You don’t have to be completely inspired each time you write a post. I highly doubt that even the greatest writers were inspired each time they put the ink on paper. So write away!

Don’t get hung up on numbers

It’s fun when you’re growing in numbers but very discouraging when you are not gaining followers or even losing them! My fellow blogger friends often complain about losing followers so I can empathise with them over this situation.

Never compromise yourself for a few followers or likes. It soooo exhausting and burns you out faster than you can imagine. I know numbers are all the rage right now in the blogging world but I believe we are shifting towards an engagement-centric community soon. It doesn’t matter, as long as your 50, 100 or 1000 followers are engaged that is amazing in itself.

Your blog, your rules

It’s your blog and you make the rules. When I had 15 followers and now I have 2400, I always had an audience that genuinely enjoyed my content. I listened to them but I always blogged about what truly interested me. I made the rules as I saw fit and because of this, it’s more difficult for me to be overwhelmed with blogging.

At the end of the day, do what makes you happy with your blog and if something is making you feel unpleasant, scrap it! It takes the edge off knowing you are completely in control of your blogging outcome…

I hope I’ve helped you with some ways to get over those overwhelming feelings over your blog.

I would love to know if you’ve ever felt overwhelmed with blogging?

What methods do you use to ease that pressure?

  1. Yes Pearl. this is it! I used to feel that way about blogging, but this few months I’ve learnt it’s okay to be a bad blogger, because blogging is meant to be fun and not give you anxiety and make you question yourself. I also hate when there is no engagement with my posts, makes me feel lowly, that’s why I canceled hosted wordpress site and moved back to wordpress.com, because then my followers can engage much more easily with my posts. Despite that, I still suck at writing, I’m going to write either today or tomorrow.

    1. It really is okay to be a bad blogger because if it’s causing you anxiety there’s really no point in doing it! Also, I totally know how you feel. Ever since I went self hosted my engagement dropped significantly and I don’t get as much followers anymore. I keep telling myself it’s only for a season. Loool
I think WordPress.com is the best for building a community for blogs because of the engagement you get! If you ever want to switch, you can consider paying for premium instead of fully self hosted cause you still get your own domain and all the perks of WordPress.com. Thank you for commenting girl! ❤️❤️

    2. Umm, do I like it? No, I love it of course! Why do you have such a great way of putting words across to readers? I once spent A WHOLE MONTH from blogging. I only have 8 followers. But the 8 followers I have I know they’ll love it. And how long to you take labouring at your laptop to make a blog post as good as this?
      Aww, all the best.

      1. Omg a whole month is so long! But if that is what it takes to get your mind right I’m all for it. Your mental health is always more important and if you need a break from blogging, take it! And that’s so amazing. You have a little blogging family of your own that I’m thankfully a part of 💃🏾
Thank you for the lovely comment girl! ❤️

    1. I’m so sorry you’re feeling discouraged…don’t give up! Blogging should be fun, not discouraging. It’s a feeling we all share and I’ve felt discouraged many times but once you recenter your feelings about why you started a blog those feelings of discouragement/anxiety will slowly disappear…❤️❤️

    1. Omg Instagram is soooo annoying these days I have a love-hate relationship with it. My engagement is also a mess. Sometimes so many people view my posts and sometimes I get no likes or views for no apparent reason 🤔 The pressure and tendency to compare is so much but I think a bit of a break would do you really well! Thank you for the lovely comment girl!

  3. Gosh I do understand this! I have up and down days, days that I just can’t… other days when all I want to do is blog and write and post like a madman. I have an entire list of blog topics I want to write about but just haven’t gotten to writing some new content. If I’m not writing, I do try to do blogging research and educate myself on the little things that beginner bloggers may not know (improving DA, engaging followers, Twitter keywords etc). Overall a great post 😁 Glad to know I am not alone…

    1. I totally understand what you mean! Sometimes I can write 3 posts in one sitting and other times to write one paragraph is so difficult. But it’s all those research I do on the side that even gives me more anxiety because I feel I need to do more. In reality I just need to focus on the few things that work for my blog and stop with all the “research”. It’s kind of like noise to me now and an excuse to procrastinate. Haha thank you for the lovely comment, I’m glad you liked this post ❤️

  4. I love this and it’s just what I needed this week!! THANK YOU!! I also agree with the writing even when you don’t wanna write. I do this on the notes app on my phone. Most often that not I’ll come back to them on another day and they have indeed been some of the best posts I’ve completed!! Thanks for sharing xx

    1. Yes! I can’t handle multiple social media accounts so I’m just focusing on Instagram and Pinterest atm because I’ll go crazy 😂 Taking a break really helps though. Thank you for the lovely comment! ❤️

  6. I have definitely felt overwhelmed with blogging, especially when I first started being serious with blogging. I firmly agree that it is important that you are producing content that you are genuinely interested in, not just writing posts to appease others. When I feel overwhelmed, I take a step back and examine my motives/intentions for creating my blog in the first place. It’s never that serious to endanger your mental health for your blog, take care of yourself first. It’s definitely okay to take a break and focus on something else you love to do, to inspire yourself again. I enjoyed your post pearl, look forward to reading more :).

  7. When I get overwhelmed with blogging, I just let it go. I rather concentrate on my other social media pages instead.

During this period, I take notes of what is wrong. Why do I feel so in the first place? I re-write my blog’s vision and mission, read them out to myself.

I then write out what I wish to talk about. By the time I am done with all these, I feel reinvigorated and anew.

If I don’t still, I just go on a social media detox and return when my sanity is stabilized.

    1. I love the idea of actively taking notes to realize your blogs mission/vision again because it’s easy to get lost on what you really started blogging for. You start occupying yourself with unnecessary things that way. And so true! A detox is also one of best things to do when you’re overwhelmed. Awesome input hun ❤️

  8. Whenever I feel pressured to compare my blogging process so far, I just take a chill pill and try to remember that I didn’t start blogging for the numbers in the first place.
I absolutely love instagram but I have learned to just ignore my engagement on there because sometimes even when you follow the rules and post at peak hour you still get zero or barely any engagement at all.
I just focus on doing better and improving myself each day. I believe soon I will get the kind of audience and attention I want /need.

    1. You’re so right! It’s important to not get too hung up on numbers to be honest. And Instagram is so stressful to be honest I don’t even give it much thought except for posting pictures and following other people. If I start cracking my brain I know I’ll just get frustrated with the app.
You definitely will! Keep at it and thank you so much for commenting ❤️

  11. This is such an important post. We spend so much time comparing…but at the end of the day it’s exhausting and damaging. Another thing that people in other professions may not understand is that when you are a writer or an artist, you are truly putting your soul and passion out there for critique. Not many people put their raw human-ness out there to be judged on a public platform. It takes courage, and sometimes we need a mental-health break ❤

Your blog is wonderful, I've enjoyed reading, and I'm glad to be a follower 🙂 SELF CARE FIRST, always.

    xx & good luck, Alexandra

    1. I totally agree I always feel like I’m giving out a part of soul to the world whenever I post on my blog. Especially my personal thoughts, because those are things I don’t articulate by speech everyday cause they’re so personal to me! I think it’s important to take breaks cause it’s not always easy to do it!
Absolutely awesome input and I’m so glad you’re my follower. Thank you 😘❤️

    1. I’m glad my post resonated with you! I think just writing is the best way to go. Don’t have many expectations of what you should do, how quickly you should get it done or the reception you will receive. Just write and let it be till it becomes fun again. I’ll check out your post 💕 Thanks for commenting 😘

  12. Ahh the NOT-so-fun side of blogging. I’m glad you shed some light on this, especially since this is how I am feeling at this VERY moment! I definitely shut down when I think of all that I have to do, and then sometimes I hear that negative voice asking me if it’s worth it, who is reading anyway, etc. Not very self-loving, especially since I talk so much about that! Taking your advice to heart, and focusing on just DOING it, not psyching myself out. But not overwhelming myself either. Thanks again!

  13. This resonates well with me. I always feel like I’m the busiest lady on the planet and I have to live up to my self acclaimed heroine skills.

I wish there was a way to tell how the mood of events would turn towards, so I’d write something that was in conformance to what would happen months to come and schedule it to post same months ahead from the present. And then not deal with regularly visiting the blog
